It is nice to receive or give something special but sometimes choosing can be difficult. You need to ask yourself various questions and make some observations, a good place to start is by looking at what the person in mind is already wearing.

• Is the jewellery predominantly gold or silver? or is the jewellery two or even three colours? Two colour peices are very popular as they can team up and tie together seperate yellow and white gold/silver/platinum pieces.

• Is the person fashion conscious in general? A fashion conscious wearer will want to constantly change the type of jewellery they wear in keeping with the latest trends. Fashion changes all the time and jewellery styles change as well.

• Is the wearer traditional in their tastes. Does the jewellery worn have a classic look or is it more modern in style?

• Is jewellery being worn daily or only taken out on special occasions? Jewellery for special occasions can be more delicate than that which will be worn daily.

• Rings - Again, try to notice the metal colour usually worn, note styles but be careful not choose a piece which is similar to something the person already has. You need to bear in mind the size of the ring also, there are various ways to determine size - you could carefully 'borrow' a ring you know to fit on the desired finger and have it measured in a jewellers or carefully draw a circle within the ring - this however is not as acurate but gives a good rough idea, plastic ring sizers can be provided for you to take a size (this may however spoil a suprise) or in most cases resizing can be undertaken at a later date once the ring has been presented.

• Earrings - Are always popular but does the person have pierced ears? Clip earrings can be worn if ears are not pierced. If earrings are worn are they small and delicate or, does the wearer prefer a larger bold look? Are gemstone earrings worn, what coulours seem to be preferred? Can you observe if drop earrings or studs are preferred?

• Necklaces - Observe if chains are worn long or short and where they sit on the neck - high or low.

• 'Growing Diamonds' - Has the person in mind ever remarked on having a larger stones in their peice of jewellery?
